About Us—Named after architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe (1764-1820), the Latrobe Chapter is the metropolitan Washington,DC, affiliate of the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH). Founded in 1940 and headquartered in Chicago, the SAH organizes annual scholarly meetings, publishes a quarterly journal and a bimonthly newsletter, and sponsors the Buildings of the United States series of guidebooks. Members of local chapters are encouraged, but not required to join the national organization ( Since its founding in 1967, the Latrobe Chapter has served as a forum for the local academic and professional community. Membership is open to anyone interested in the history of architecture and the built environment. We currently have about 175 members.

Chapter Activities
  • Lectures given at various Washington-area venues by local or visiting scholars on topics of wide architectural interest including architectural history of all periods, design, planning, urbanism, and historic preservation 
  • Study Tours of historic buildings and sites in the Washington area 
  • Biennial Symposia on the historic development of metropolitan Washington, DC

Ways to Save 
  • E-mail only membership: Skip mailings, eliminate paper, and save $5 on annual memberships. You will receive e-mail notifications and reminders of all chapter events. 
  • Prepaid lecture series: You can save money and breeze through registration by prepaying for the full lecture series. The $45 fee covers all five lectures, and is a savings of $5 over the individual charges. Note: Tours are by individual reservation and have a separate fee.
